With a passion for healthy living and background as a small farmer, “Farmer Mark” Anderson started the Sprouts of Promise Foundation in 2009 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the goal of educating both children and adults on the importance of healthy eating with fresh produce from local farmers. Anderson gained intimate knowledge of farmers’ markets while he was working as a Southern California farmer selling produce to markets in Los Angeles County—and the experience helped forge his idea to use farmers’ markets as the key educational platform for the nonprofit. He opened the first Sprouts of Promise certified farmers’ market in Playa Vista in 2009 and has since started three more farmers’ markets in Los Angeles and Orange counties—in Costa Mesa, Monterey Park, and Newport Beach.
